fix differential or swap? 1800 64

Now that I've discovered a problem in my differential I have to decide whether or not to fix it or swap it with a newer lower ratio unit. I've been told that the axle shafts are different on the latter models so the whole real axle must be used. The track rod on the latter models attaches on the right side unlike mine so perhaps welding must be done( I am assuming that the axle housings of my car will not fit with the newer differential). Also the u-joints are different so the whole shaft must be changed. Does the thicker shaft attatch to m40 gearbox? Has anyone gone down this route before?
