Front Suspension Woes 200 1977

Hope some of you smart folks out there can give me some ideas.

Vehicle: 77 245 Wagon 165,000+ (speedo was broken for a while) -- one owner so I know there is no hidden damage from past wrecks, etc.

About a year ago I got the car aligned in response to unusual tire wear. At the time, the aligner told me he could feel a slight resistance when steering to the left -- I had never noticed it. Six months later when taking a road trip, I noted that I had to steer slightly to the left to keep the car going straight. Recently, the tire wear returned along with tendancy to "drift" to the right. Had alignment performed and the "drift was still to the right although the suspension was properly aligned. The alignment tech told me that the wheels would move slightly to the left without steering input when the wheels were off the ground and the engine running. Suspecting perhaps a bad rack (after all -- high mileage, age) so replaced. Following realignment, drift is now to the right. The car has a tendancy to "dive" to the right with right steering input (my wife describes it as steering on ice) while offering some resistance to left steering input. Additionally, the wheel will not readily return to center following a right turn although it returns to center normally following a left turn.

Volvo service advisor sez "Live with it."

As I said, reman rack and new tie rod ends so far. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx.
