I have been using Fram oil filters for years because they are readily available and usually cost about $2.50. And, I have cut several open over the years and found no defects. I've been reading most of the posts and links on filters lately and had decided to start using better filters on both our cars. In the past I had believed that any filter was OK as long as it was made by a reputable company which I thought Fram was. A couple posts had really gotten me worried however and I now have a case of Manns for the Volvo and a case of Mahle for the wife's BMW.
Last night I returned home after a 150 mile trip from my parents home and decided it was a good time to do the oil change while the engine was hot and I had some time. (UPS dropped off my case of Manns from IPD Friday night.)
When I turned the Fram filter over to dump the oil into the drain pan I felt something inside the housing shift! I then shook it, and sure enough, the filter element was loose. With hind sight I had noticed the oil, Mobil 1, getting dark and had attributed it to the time in service and the fact that the engine had probably previously used conventional oil. The magnet on the IPD drain plug also had a more-than-normal accumulation of "ferrus-sludge".
The sump now has fresh Mobil 1 10W-30 and the filter is a Mann!
I located a source for a good aircraft style oil filter cutter and ordered it this morning. I should have it Wednsday and I'll let you know what I find.
BTW, The site where I ordered the cutter from has a few good thoughts on filtering I think are worth reading. See http://www.airwolf.com/Tips_Tricks.htm for some good theory on the use of magnets in oil filter systems.
