RPM Guage reads high but why? 700 1988

The RPM guage runs about 4000 rpm at 65mph in 4th gear. The engine does not sound like 4000 rpm. In fact it sounds just like my '87 740 at 65 mph in 4th gear. What actually feeds the guage? The wiring plans that I have don't show that. Does it have anything to do with the computer?
