fourth gear override 700 1992

When my 1992 740 turns over, the fourth gear override indicator arrow on the dashboard comes on and stays on. The car will not go into fourth gear. Depressing the button on the gear shift lever and releasing it has no effect. After driving for awhile the light will arbitrarily go out and the car will shift into fourth. This pattern will last for a few weeks and then stop and the car will operate correctly for a couple of months before it happens again. Any suggestions on how to correct the problem?
