Car randomly won't reverse 200 1983

1983 245Ti 4sp/OD, sometimes (once a week avg) I will go to reverse the car and it doesn't move. When it occurs I have no problem shifting into reverse but as I let up the clutch the gearbox has a quiet 'whine' noise and the car doesn't move. If I shut the car off for a second or two it will always reverse just fine the next attempt. The gearbox performs normally in all other gears. Anybody come accross this problem? What is the going rate for a 4sp box at a bone yard?
