Hello all,
Thanks for the advice regarding the '74 164E I'm thinking of buying.
Today I went to look at the car more in-depth and get an idea of what I'm
buying :-)
The car overall is very solid and in good shape. However, it's running a
bit odd and here are the details:
This car has the B30 fuel injected engine. When the car is initially
started, it runs rough almost like it's missing on a cylinder or two (the
engine can visibly be seen rocking back and forth and the exhaust note is
sputtery).
However it also quickly climbs and idles at about 2000 rpm.
It will sit there and idle at 2000 rpm and be sputtery all day long. It
never really totally smooths out. When you put it into a drive range or add
a significant load to the engine like turning on the AC, the idle drops way
down and still running quite rough, the engine will then proceed to stall
out. It doesn't seem to be very responsive to the throttle as it is dying
out either.
I went around the engine compartment and looked for obvious vacuum leaks or
other weirdness. Found a hose not connected to anything, turns out it is
the hose from charcoal canister to intake manifold so I reconnected that.
Found another hose that appears to be an auto tranny vent line but it is not
connected to anything in the engine compartment. It is a rubber hose toward
the back of the engine room that connects to a metal pipe which plunges down
alongside the transmission dipstick (auto tranny) and from underneath this
metal pipe appears to go into the top of the tranny but it's hard to say for
sure. I'd appreciate it if anyone could confirm/deny that for me.
I looked around and most everything seemed to be intact. I found what I
think is the aux air regulator. There is a hose which runs from the air
cleaner to a plastic dealie with a thumbscrew on it. A short hose runs from
that plastic dealie to a metal thing mounted to the cylinder head at the
front of the engine. This I assume to be the air valve. Another hose runs
from this air valve back to the plastic dealie w/ thumbscrew and from there
joins up with the EGR and intake manifold again. This would seem to me to
be the air bypass circuit around the throttle valve.
The thumbscrew I am assuming is the idle adjustment thumbscrew. Found
something there I couldn't identify though, right below the thumbscrew on
the plastic dealie is some sort of electrical device. It looks like it
might be a valve of some sort. It has 2 push-on electrical terminals, only
one of which had a wire to it. The wire ran over to the left side of the
engine and joined up with the wire that goes to the AC compressor to
activate the clutch. So maybe this is some sort of additional air valve to
help raise the idle when the AC is turned on. Can anyone confirm/deny? Can
anyone tell me if it should have another wire on the other terminal, perhaps
to ground?
So what I need to figure out is why it's running rough, why it's idling so
high and why it stalls when put into a drive range or put under load at idle
speed.
Any ideas?
Also found that the fuel pump is wired to come on when the ignition key is
turned on, which seems wrong. On my Bus's L-Jet system the fuel pump does
not operate unless either the starter is operating or the engine is running.
It will shut off if the engine stalls, this being a fire safety feature.
Perhaps someone has been into the wiring on this one. Also, where is the
fuel pump located? I could hear it but couldn't really see it under the
car.
I think I will probably wind up buying it but I'd like to have some ideas of
where to go with it when I get it :-)
I don't have any kind of manual yet though I am working on that. Does
anyone have info on timing specs for this engine? Timing, point gap/dwell,
firing order?
Thanks in advance,
Sean Bartnik
