Timing gears 140-160 1973

I recently bought a 1973 144 with fuel injection. It had been sitting about a year but I got it to run roughly with new plugs and points. I still can not get the timing right. When rotating the distributor to align the timing marks the vacum hit the block before they align. I pulled the distributer which obviously had not been out for quite awhile and rotated it 1 cog on the cam. I can now align the marks but but the engine will not continue to run. Is it possible the fiber cam gear has broken a tooth? Does the fuel injection system have anything to do with the timing? Thanks, Alan Husby
