164 died (knocking sound) 140-160 1970

I went for a long drive tonight. On the way back I noticed a slight

noise that the motor hadn't made before -- after putting at load for

a while, it would make a knocking sound when I backed off the throttle.

When I pulled into my driveway, I noticed that it was making a much

louder knocking noise at idle. The noise would go away if I blipped

the throttle, and didn't seem to speed up much when I blipped the

throttle, but it did come back (louder) after I backed off.

The noise seemed to be coming from near the rear of the motor. It

continued to idle smoothly and the motor didn't jump around, but

it did start to stall more and more easily. I checked and the oil

light and it was not on or flickering or anything. I shut the motor

down and restarted it and the oil lamp behaved as normal, but the

car quickly stalled and I did not restart it.

The car was running well, had normal temp and oil pressure and was

getting good mileage and made lots of power when it did this. Guess

I don't need to worry about the amsoil for a while.

Where should I start, besides looking at all the plugs and listening

around with some vacuum hose in my ear... Timing gear? spun cam

bearing? broken connecting rod / crank bearing?
