Clunk goes the tranny? 200 '85

I'm curious about a clunking sound I'm hearing below my butt when I'm accelerating in first gear. sometimes it's one solid clunk, other times its a bunch of little clunks, sounding like one of those radioactivity meters (I can't remember what they're called, you see them in movies from the '80s!). I've been given a clue that it might be the transmission mount bushing, in which case it shouldn't be too hard to fix, but I was wondering if it might be anything else.

Another question. Is it very difficult to replace shocks and struts? If not, I migyht do it myself, but I want to know what the labor is worth so I can weigh the value of my sanity against the dollar value of the labor (and whether or not I should go to a shock dealer for the free service). And I know this comes up a lot, but for someone who can't afford Bilsteins right now, what's a good replacement for less money? Especially for someone who just might be in a rock band and just might end up carrying a bunch of heavy stuff in the back of his wagon.

Oh, please, masters of the volvo message board, counsel me on this machine that I want to love and care for.

Thanks folks!

Tim
