Clutch "whine/squeal" when under load?? 200 81

Hello,

my 81 242 with the ol' reliable M46 has been displaying an odd symptom during the last few months...; in that when releasing the clutch (ie- having it ruturn to the "home position" as i call it) while reversing or starting up a hilll (especially),i hear what i can best describe as a low pitch "squeal" noise which seems to be coming from the lower engine compartment.. Car has 201k miles and it might be the original clutch (!?) my paperwork for the car does not seem to show it ever being replaced.. Is this a sign of a worn clutch?? ive never had any real problems with it, even today 'cept for the annoying noise under load, and the fact that it seems to "release" at the very top of travel (ie, it releases towards the very end of the pedal's travel upward)..

any thoughts??

thanks!

Miles

81 242
