Exhausting exhaust work. Help on flange, please. 700 1987

I would appreciate help. Thanks!

It looked easy to replace the leaking gasket on the flange between the exhaust manifold and the downpipe. NOT!

Removed three nuts. OK.

Removed clamp to the mount (below) that holds A/T cooling lines and exhaust pipes. OK

Wiggle, pull, drive chisels and blades in the joint. The joint separated: good! Gasket is now *really* shot: bad!

Joint only opened about 1/8", max, no matter what.

Removed ALL exhaust hangers. (Fun.)

Wiggle exhaust, raise, lower, L, R... still no more movement at the flange, despite I can see gaps around the studs in the holes in the flange (like they have NOT amalgamated themselves to each other or something).

Feeling really stupid and frustrated. Am considering going to medical school and becomeing brain surgeon so that I can pay others to do these things for me. Would be feeling equally stupid and frustrated then, I suppose.

Thanks, anyone--everyone.

Gregg
