AW71 won't shift to 4th 700 1987

I own a 1987 764 GLE with the B280F V6. The 4th gear disengaged light has been staying on for a couple of weeks even when the tranny would shift to 4th gear. Does this light mean anything else than 4th disengaged? But now the tranny won't shift to 4th. I'm pretty sure the switch on my shifter is working. How do I engage 4th if my switch is broken? I'm gonna try to borrow someone else's switch, but what if that doesn't work.
