Hello,
I have been having recurring trouble with my 1980 245 (Wagon-140K, auto).
Here's the scenario:
I'll drive the car for an hour or so at highway speeds, and then park it.
If I try to start it again after 15 minutes or so, the dash lights come on like usual, but there is no starter/turn over (at all)... just dead, but all electrical is working. This happens without fail, after extended drive time. (If I am just running short errands, I have no problem.)
If the engine totally cools (like I leave it over nite) it starts no prob. At first, I thought I had a bad battery, so I would get a jump, and the car would start, no problem. I got the battery replaced, yet the problem persisted, so the next time it happened, I tried to get a jump again, and it started immediately. So basically, anytime this happens to me (stopping at the store on the way home...), I have to get a jump start, and it starts immediately. I know it's not the battery, and like I said, this only happens after extended drive time, but corrrects itself after the engine cools.
I would really appreciate any ideas on what this could be. It is some much better to go to the mechanic sounding like I know what I'm talking about
Again, thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!
D Johnson
(PS-I've replaced neutral safety switch thinking this was the cause.)
