another Overdrive question 200 85

Okay, so my wonderful 1985 244GL just turned 100,000 (it was my father's and he lived and worked in a small town...) and now things are not going so wonderfully. I was parked at a client's house with the A/C running and the overdrive engaged (standard operating position) when all of a sudden, the orange light on the instrument panel shows up and, when we were driving down the road, the car did not shift into overdrive. Since it sure seemed like something electrical and I couldn't figure out how to get to the overdrive switch on the gear shift knob, I replaced the relay switch and had extraordinary high hopes. That were quickly dashed: orange light still on, no shifting into overdrive on the highway. Bummer.

I have checked out some previous posts and am relieved that the solenoid does not seem to be a probable cause; I just don't know how -- or if I even should! -- try to get to that switch. Help!!!
