ventilation fan 200 1984

It's a 1984 DL wagon w/4 cyl & 4spd O/D auto tranny. My ventilation fan has died, but before it died it would speed up and slow down on its own regardless of switch position. The fuse is intact and neither my Haynes nor my Chilton manuals show any kind of relay (that I can find anyway). I really don't want to pull the fan motor out if I can avoid it, can anyone help me figure out what's wrong so I can fix it?
