Solenoid Burnout 200 1991

I have a '91 240 wagon with automatic. In the last 6 months we have replaced the solenoid because it has lost the kick down gear (1st time) and 2nd, 3rd, and kickdown (2nd time). I have asked the mechanic to determine if an electrical problem is causing the burnout (power surge, switch problem) and he is going to try but isn't guaranteeing that it won't happen again. Any thoughts on what might cause this problem to recur?
