Reason why shift cables need adjusting? 700 1987

I just had to adjust the shift down cable on my 87 765T 157K miles. The shifting got harder recently and especially after I had the wiring harness replaced. It was staying in each gear forever and would shift if you let off the gas. BTW the transmission was replaced at 125K miles with new remanufactured unit. I had to significantly loosen the the shift down cable to get normal shifts.

Question is, what things can cause the shift down cable to need adjusting? Could it just be wear of the cable itself? or the transmission? the hot weather..100+, or something about the new wiring harness, mayber improved power band, etc. ??

Note that my 92 944GL has never had the shift down cable adjusted.

Appreciate any ideas.
