Jon -

You do have poser of a problem. Post with the answer to Lars Q re: what sort of bang, thump, etc.

The alternator light is on when current flows frm the battery thru it to ground via the alternator brushes. The other indicator lights ground with it. When the alternator produces current, the ground is lost and all those lights go out.

The brush unit can be pulled without removing the alternator, but you must disconnect the negative battery cable first. Removal takes a short small flat tip screwdriver and a little manipulating. Installation is a little tricky, a small mirror is helpful to see what's in there.

The brushes must be a minimum of 3mm long. If not, replace either the brushes in the unit (cheap, requires soldering skills) or the unit (not cheap).

That may not solve the problem, I hope it helps.
