Thanks all for the quick replies.

I think the bang was just the car suddenly shutting off while doing 45 in fourth gear.

The starter is fine, just think the flywheel was spinning too fast for it to do anything but grind. I shouldn't have even tried using it before going with the bump-start.

It's raining now, but tomorrow's project is going to be fiddling with every ground point I can find.

Strage problem...I poked around with the multi-meter for a minute while the altinator light was on, the battery is getting charged as normal, a shade under 14.5 volts.
