Problems: 740 cold start bad and rough idle!! 700 1986

Well, here is the problem. My 1986 740 GLE does not like to cold start. Invariably, when I try to cold start it (in the morning or after 8 hours or so of sitting), it starts with a VERY rough idle and then dies a few seconds later. The second start always works though. The other thing is, once it does start, the idle is rough and a bit low (around 550 RPM). Here is what I have done to try to remedy the problem: pulled and cleaned the throttle body (it was GUNKY!), and pulled and cleaned the idle air control valve (it was also GUNKY!). Tried to adjust the idle speed knob, but there is just a very slight change in the idle speed with that knob (like from 500 to 700 RPM at both extremes). These alterations definately restored some power to the car, but I still have the same rough idle and hard cold start problems. My feeling is that these problems are linked, and that if I could get the idle up it would fix both problems. I had read that by a white wire with a red stripe from the ECU I could do a computer reset of the idle speed, and I also saw that someone clamped off the vaccume hose going to the idle air control valve. I am planning to clean out the injectors next weekend... any suggestions?
