OD problems (M46) 200 1983

My 83 242DL with M46 is having overdrive problems. When i push the button, while driving the car, nothing happens. With the engine off, but with the key in the II position and the car in 4th gear the od light flashes when the button is pushed, but it does not stay on.

I have applied 12 Volts to the solenoid and it works. I suspect I have a bad wire somewhere. i took the OD relay off of another car, switched it and it does the same thing. I removed the switch and tesed it and it is also fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

I plan to attack the car this weekend armed with the Bentley and the diagnosis flowchart that IPD put in the back of the latest catalog.
