mechanic quoted 715.00 to fix leakin condensor, can i repair this myself? 200 85

i took my wife's car in to get an estimate to fix her a/c. it runs for about 2wks fine and then quits due to no freon in system. mechanic said it would cost 715 dollars to fix the leaking condensor. i have an 82 that had a/c but does not work. could i take the condensor off this car and have a radiator shop check it out or even take my wife's condensor that leaks and have them fix it? i know nothing about a/c repair, the books try to have you take it to a shop. is this a job for a mechanic with special tools to tackle? seven hundred sounds high. thanks will
