Ron,

I have a 1989 740 wagon and the limitations of 3 car seats in the car, is that there are only 2 anchor points. This would limit the safe installation of 3 car seats as you were questioning, if however you had 2 car seats (one each on the outside of the back seat) and then used the center lap belt for a booster seat.

This would be the only SAFE way to get 3 kids into the back seat, other wise you might look into getting the 3rd back seat for the wagon that fits in the very back of the car.
