AW71 to M46/M47 700 1989

I'm considering swapping my Aw71 auto tranny on my 1989 740 GLE (16 Valve) for a manual. I've heard M90 is the all around best tranny. Is it better than a M46 or M47. Which is better between the M46/47. I've done lots of engine work on my Volvo but never something of this caliber. Is there lots of wiring and complicated mods or is it just unbolting old parts and bolting on the new. Will installing the pedals and shifter be difficult? I'm confused about the severity of this swap- some have told me it's easy while others say it's very in-depth and I should have a whole other car to swap from. Thanks for any info....I'm just trying to figure out what I'm getting in to!!!!
