Intermittent odometer 200 1983

The odometer works well when it works, but it decides when to do so. Any ideas? I'm leaning to speedo sensor, but the speedo works fine. If I had bad odo gears, why would it work well for days at a time? The other option is (horrors!) wiring between sensor & odometer.

Why, oh why, did they abandon cables? TB
