testing a power stage 700 1987

Does anybody know how to test a power stage other than installing a new one and hoping that solves the problem? (car is an '87 740 Turbo with lots of mileage on it. Engine quits when it gets hot, won't restart until engine gets cold. Distributor was replaced a couple years ago, so Hall sensor should be OK, and IAC also replaced around the same time. Air mass meter has been replaced, too. Man, these bricks can get expensive to maintain!)
