He-man hood-hinge spring-installation trick? 700 1987

Today's my day to pick everyone's brain on all of the nagging little projects that I have to complete on my 1987 760-Turbo. I just had to replace my hood-hinges (don't ask!) and want to know what the trick is to getting those stiff springs installed. It looks like I should have had them already on the hinge when I was installing it, but I found it impossible to line up the bolt holes AND stretch the spring at the same time. Also, is there anyway that I can check/clean/lubricate the secondary "safety" hood-latch mechanism - the one that prevents the hood from flying open if one forgets to slam it down tightly after checking one's oil (again, don't ask!)?? Just curious...
