I dunno about the safty catch (you're refering to the little catch thing in the center, directly above the grille, correct?), I'd try white grease or maybe wd-40.

As for the springs. They're fun, ask me how i know :)

I had to replace the hinges on my car after i wrecked it

Here's what I did:

Grabbed a friend

got a short chain(maybe 3-4 feet)

a decent sized flat head screw driver(any size craftsman will do ;) )

I hooked one end of the spring to the hinge

put the other end through one of the chain links, and then pulled on it while my friend got it over the tab.

pry the chain off, repeat as necessary.

After discovering that, it only took about 5 minutes from start to finish to install both springs.
