You can put a box directly on the roof, skipping the cost and height increase of the Thule. This works OK if you don't put anything heavy up there. With the rain gutters of the 240 and 740, there are much less expensive roof rack choices if you prefer the box to be on a rack for more load capacity.

In my experience, though, the novelty of the third seat wears off quickly, especially for younger kids on a road trip. I would be inclined to keep then all in the middle, unless you have a problem with fighting in such close quarters (having kids that squabble in the car on long road trips does not make you bad parents). Things will get better as you can retire the various types of child seat.
