Possible turbine failure?

My problem is as follows:

When driving my ´86 760 turbo (B230FT with Garrett turbine), the turbine starts making a loud mmuuuuuuu sound when starting to spin up. Also, it ends with a loud pheeeeew sound when I let go of the accelerator. BUT, when I floor it, the turbine acts normally, giving a good boost all the way up. That sound only comes on when trying to maintain speed and the turbine comes in with a little load. Those I have talked to say that the bearings in the turbine are worn out and that sound may be from them or the blades scraping the housing. What do you guys think?

If the bearings are the problem, should I consider replacing the bearings, or get a new turbine? What is the cost?

When I remove the turbine, what should I be careful about? Anyone done that? Can anyone give me a rough information about that. Is there anything else I should look at while the turbine is out?

Thanks everybody.
