Hello all,
Help! I sadly think my turbo might be done for(??)...
I purchased a lovely 82 GLT with (i am guessing) the original oil-cooled Turbo in it.The car has 202K miles.. The Turbo still appears to spin up, but its very loud (sounds kind of like a low pitch siren, as i put it). The farthest i've gotten the guage to go is just barely near the center of the Yellow zone. It appears the turbo is the loudest( it emits a rattle/raspy metallic noise) as it enters the Yellow zone, but quiets up somewhat once it reaches the middle of the yellow zone (its max power area).. I swear i hear this and it doesnt sound healthy.. This is my first Turbo car.. From what i have read, the turbo units are for the most part supposed to be quiet or at most- barely audible. Mine i can certainly hear. not to mention i am getting little, if any "thrust" from the Turbo (it usually feels like i am driving a standard 240dl). So, my question(s) to the Board are the following:
-Is it possible to fit a Intercooled (watercooled) Turbo on this car? if so, What kind of modifications need to be implemented to accomadate that change? (i ask because someone has offered me one to buy)
-Can the old Turbo be rebuilt? (Or is it time to play "Taps" for the old Turbo)?
-i am regrettably somewhat strapped for cash- i'd be happy with a rebuild or used solution, just as long as that solution works.. How much money are we looking at to get this car running again (rough ball park figure)?
-is it safe to attempt to Drive the car as-is anymore with the turbo making all that noise?
Thanks guys- you've always been a great help!.. if anybody has some info or can shed some light on this, (or if you have a Turbo to sell!) please Fire away! :)
thanks,
Miles
82 244 GLT (with the Turbo that sounds like an *old* canister vaccum cleaner)
