HELP!
I have a 244Gl that is driving me nuts.
Let me tell what I have done and then you will see why!
This car was purchased new by me. I have a long history of idling problems from about the 75K mile point own. It now has about 160K on the car and still has over 200 psi compression in all cylinders ( difference is less that 8 psi from high to low). the car was stored in Nov 98 when my wife decided she wanted a van to drive, Instead of selling the car, we decided that it would be a good car for our sons to use, so we stored it. two months ago I started cleaning it up. I got the Bentley manual and a lot of help from the archives here.
I started checking all the circuits out, because I read where these particular models had a problem with the wiring harnesses, but I only found one wire that was bad and it was to the temp gauge on the dash.
What follows is what I have done so far.
The AMM would not adjust at the CO screw, no amperage change within the meter - so I replaced it.
The temperature sensor was grounded out - so I replaced that.
The O2 sensor output was nil, nada (I checked the heating circuit - it had 12 volts at the sensor) - so I replaced that too!
I also replaced the rotor button, distributor cap, spark plug wires, coil wire, and spark plugs.
After all that, I changed the oil and filter before I started the car for the first time since it was set up.
when she started it ran real rich - you could smell the gas fumes real bad. My first thought was vacuum leak - so I replaced all the vacuum hoses and checked the idle air control valve. The valve was stuck closed. I cleaned it and reinstalled it...it worked for a few minutes then froze again -> so I replaced that too.
I took the fuel rail loose and checked the injectors -> 2 were working perfectly and 2 weren't -> so I replaced two injectors and put new o-rings on the remaining two. I then reassembled everything and started the car again. It ran better but after about ten minutes of idle speed, #4 cylinder would foul out. You can rev the engine and clear the miss, but after about a minute or two she begins miss firing again. The engine idle is about 900 RPM in park or neutral and 780 rpm in gear, until the miss firing reappears. If you try and drive the car, the engine hesitates and stalls. I thought then that I must be bleeding air into the intake from somewhere, so I replaced the intake manifold gasket, removed the throttle body and cleaned it, and checked the throttle switch. I reassembled and tried again, better still ( the throttle body had some grunge, but not much)but after a few minutes #4 cylinder fell out again.
Now I am stumped. I took it to a "mechanic"..but he couldn't figure it out either.
Am I looking at a new ECU? Can they be intermittent that way on one cylinder?
I apologize for the long entry.
