Shifting while in park? 700 1990

Hi,

Looking for help with my 1990 740 gl wagon. I just bought the car, and whenever I am in park, with the vehicle idling, it sounds like the engine is actually shifting from one gear, the back again, constantly. And also, there is a strange, different gasoline smell from the exhaust. When I filled the takn with gas, I used 89 octane unleaded with a 10% ethanol mix. Is this not acceptable? Thanks for any help.
