I was at a U-Pull-it last week. Last time I was there was in 00/99/98, a few years ago. Two years ago there were a bunch of 240's with alloy wheels - all of them with good rims - though many needed reconditioning. At that time I was looking for alloy wheels for a 91, 740. No such animal in U-Pull-its.
This time I went for steel rims for an 89, 240. When I got there, all the alloys and steels had been taken. I needed steel rims. I was looking for steel rims for an 89. Evidently, even an 89 is a relatively new car in Volvo life spans. I needed a wide headed screw to hold my dash in, and got lucky and found one. Then I got home and saw my bag had a hole in it and the screw fell out. So it cost me a $1.00 entry fee, and $15.00 in fuel, all for a screw I lost. Wonder if I lost any other screws? Guess it wasn't my day.
At any rate, I noticed something that struck me as odd - but perhaps it is not so odd. I found some 1980, 81, 83, 84, 85, and 86, 240's. When I looked over the vehicles I discovered that all of them had no wheels, no plastic door pockets, few interior fasteners if any, and no rear headrests. And a few had dashes torn apart for something inside the dash. But everything else seemed to be there. All of them had engines, transmissions, and rear axles intact, body's with all the windows intact, seats intact. Now I have to wonder what is it about those parts that were taken that are so darned desirable? Then again I myself was looking for wheels too. Guess wheels go first, huh? I'll have to remember that.
Sincerely,
Robert
