Idle speed 140-160 1974

Hello all,

I know that the idle speed for my 164E with automatic transmission is supposed to be 800 rpm. However, I'm not sure whether that should be in Park or in Drive. If I set it to idle at 800 rpm in Park it idles VERY slow when shifted into gear -- so low that it runs roughly and the oil light will flicker when the engine is hot.

If I kick it up so it runs smoothly at warm idle in gear it idles at above 1000 rpm in Park. What's the official word? Neither my Chilton's nor my Haynes nor the owner's manual are specific on this point.

I'd rather have it run smoothly at idle in gear since that's where it spends most of its idling time, but I wanted to see what the "correct" solution is.

Thanks,

Sean Bartnik
