Re: Dash lights glows dimly at idle - alternator? 200 79

Well Gerard, DAMHIK (pronounced dammit) about leaving off oil filler cap. It is now my ironclad procedure that a removed oil filler cap is placed upside down over the hole where the hood latch goes in. Yes, I've bounced the hood a few times, but.....

The alternator produces current in the stator - heavy red wire to battery -when the rotor is spinning and there is voltage in the rotor coils which gets there via the brushes. If there isn't voltage thru the brushes, there is no electricity generated. So, oil on the slip rings? Maybe.

Quick test: First time you start in the morning, when car has set overnight, leave the door open and look at the dome light while starting. If the light gets way dim, the battery is low. Try this when battery is dead and light goes almost out. If you get the dim light, have a look at the brushes and slip rings. After all, they are about the only things that wear - besides bearings - on the alternator.

Good Luck,

Bob
