crack in header pipe/converter 900 94

Hello, new to forum. I have a '94 960 wagon with a rattling noise during acceleration. It goes away once I coast in crusing speeds. The local volvo dealer said that I have a crack in the header pipe/converter. It cost over $800 for the part alone plus labor costs.

Someone said that this may be fixable by a muffler shop with welding if the crack is small (hairline).

Any advise or comments are appreciated. Why so expensive for the part? Thanks, George
