Steering wheel replacement is neither difficult nor stupid. I find that a nice wheel (Momos are my favorite) with a comfy grip and leather cover adds immeasurably to driving pleasure.
Removal requires only a big enough socket for the big nut that holds the wheel on, and an inexpensive all-purpose gear puller. The "slam the wheel with both hands from behind" method can get it loose, but it puts your column stalks at risk. If your wheel has an airbag, there are safety procedures that must be taken before you start messing with it, but I'm unfamiliar with that.
Putting in the new wheel is easy, as long as you have the correct hub for your model. Often it won't center quite right, which you can correct by adjusting both tie rod ends by the same amount, or just wait until your next alignment and the shop will do it for you.
Size is up to you. I find most factory wheels to be too large. Keeping a clear view of your gauges is also a consideration.
Shopping tip: it's kind of hard to find the adapter kits for the older Volvos. I was strung along for months before I discovered that my special order to Momo would never be filled, (they were waiting to accumulate 100 orders before they would build it). Your best bet may be to find a good used wheel w/ adapter off of someone's wrecked Volvo.
