changing bumpers 200 81

I'm curious about changing the bumpers on my '81 240. The ones I have on right now are factory, but I'd like to upgrade to something that's completely 'paint-able'. The bumpers from the later models, say '89 or so look like they can be completely painted (no rubber covers). Also, these newer bumpers appear to line up flush with the rear quarter panels better than the stock units. Can these bumpers be fitted onto my year? Can I just peel off the rubber on mine and succesfully paint them?
