Rear differentail removal. 444-544 63

I was wondering if the rear differential can be removed from the differential housing after the axle shafts have been pulled and the

pinion flange is removed? My pinion gear has excessive play and I'm

thinking maybe one or both pinion support bearings are bad? Is there

some sort of spacer behind the pinion crown? I've taken both bearing

caps off but the differential cage doesn't budge. This isn't one of those

brands that need a stretching tool?
