sunroof leakage 900 1997

Trying to fix a sunroof leakage on my Volvo 960 ’97, which I thought was caused by damaged sealing strip, I brought the car to the local Volvo dealership in Washington, DC area. After they had examined my car they told me that the sealing strip replacement wouldn’t fix the problem. I have been told that the problem was caused by the Glass Hatch. They showed me a Tech-Net Note from Volvo, which says the following:

“Model: 960 and S/V 90

Subject: Sunroof leakage

Date: 7/6/98

No: 83-10

Trying to diagnose and pinpoint the basic cause for a water leak in the sunroof can sometimes be difficult.

However, we have found that the most common cause is the Glass Hatch. The glass hatch may leak between the glass and the metal frame that has been glued on the hatch. In this case, water can drip down into the wire channel instead of the drainage channel in the tub.

Since spring 1997, we have an improved version of the glass hatch from the Factory. P/N 9447664-5 (glass hatch).

My car was manufactured in January 1997 and it’s not under warranty anymore. To replace the glass hatch would cost me about eleven hundred dollars. Has anybody been through this with the Volvo and knows more cost effective ways to fix the problem?

Should Volvo take the responsibility?

I appreciate your inputs.
