Heat Shield Rattle 200 1988

The heat shield around my exhaust manifold rattles a lot when the car is cold. If I touch it with a big screwdriver it shuts up. The bolts that hold the 2 pieces together are rather corroded so I'm sure it will be a real joy to take it off. So, is it just the heat shield or is that a secondary effect of something else such as bad motor mounts? Do I need the thing? I disconnected the hot air hose to the airbox since hot air is not a priority in Phoenix. What other purpose does it serve?

My daughter just got her license yesterday and she will be driving this car. She already hates it and the rattling isn't helping her bond with the car.

Thank you.
