I guess you have a spare tank in your car. In Australia, I guess the distance between two gas stations can be as far as 1,000 km apart. Hence the need for a spare tank.

First of all, check if you have a pump in the spare tank. If not, then verify that the bottom of the spare tank is connected to the main tank, and that there is a vent from the top of the spare to the main tank. Make a drawing of what you have.

If the above is true, then it is a matter of remove and plug.

If you have a more complicated system, then it will require more brain work.

(I used to do petrochemical refining and processing units. This is why I dare to give the opinion. However, I have never come across such a situation. In U.S., even when traveling in the desert, 50 km between gas stations is considered far apart. If you need further assistance, please communicate with me privately.)
