Timing the B230FT 700 1988

Hello everyone,

I am soon going to be doing some overdue routine maintenance on my '88 760 Turbo and I had a question about the ignition timing. Having swapped the distributor a few months back, I remember having a hell of a time setting the base ignition timing on this engine. The mark was usually nowhere to be seen. Occasionally, the mark would appear but would wander drastically and then disappear again. My father tried to time this engine when he owned this car and he could never do it either. I have tried two different timing lights (both were set up correctly), so I believe that the light isn't my problem. Eventually I ended up aligning the distributor exactly how I took the other one off and assumed it was close enough. Is there any prerequisite to timing this engine? Am I missing something? The manuals that I have (Chilton and Haynes) do not go into ANY detail as to how to time this engine. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!
