The brakes on my '91 740 did that when I bought the car. The Axxis pads had a manufacturing defect -- the tensioning springs all broke (or maybe they're called anti-rattle springs). The pads were swapped out at no cost.

I installed 'em.

That was about five years ago, and I've never had another noise from the brakes.
