Evan,

You provoked a response, which is more than most of the stuff that gets posted manages. As for getting berated, perhaps, but there again oftentimes it seems a significant percentage of stuff that causes controversy is the small percentage of stuff that rises above total mediocrity. People feel driven to defend the little knowledge they have, and the smaller that fund of knowledge, the fiercer the defence.

No one is indispensable, but that doesn't mean the board wouldn't be the poorer for your leaving. Please don't cut off your nose to spite your own face, at least make the decision once the furore has died down.
