good spark, good pumps, but no start 200 85

Hi all,

I just picked up an '85 245, mint inside and out (welded floors, replaced wiring, working doors, etc) for $200 beacuse it isn't starting. The PO said he thought it was the AMM, said he was coming home one day and it began to run terrible, eventually doing 15 or so with his foot on the floor, got it home and hasn't started since; said it died the same exact way 4 or so years back and it was the AMM at the time. Sure sounds like an AMM.

Well, pull the AMM plug, cranks like a genius, but still no start. Swap the AMM with a good one, still no start. Check ignition system, all coil readings normal on the multimeter and good strong spark at the plugs themselves.

Okay, fuel system next. Can hear the fuel pump relays click on and off with the key. Jumper fuses 4 and 6 to listen w/o engine cranking noise, can hear the pumps running--both nice and quiet. Try starting with fuses jumped to rule out wiring from relays to pumps, still no start. Swap fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail with a good one, still no start.

All manifold and firewall grounds checked. Injectors are recieving proper voltage. I pulled the timing belt cover, belt is intact and seems very recent--doesn't seem like a candiate for slipping--also a slipped belt doesn't seem to match the dying symptoms as given by PO.

So a few questions, how do I check the timing without a timing light, ie, just by looking at the belt and the distributor? Also is there some sort of in-tank sock that would cause a no start condition (the car sat since the fall with about a quater of a tank, I put in some dry gas, but not any fresh gas yet--could it even be as simple as fuel gone bad?) Finally, how rare is it to run into a clogged fuel line? Any common places? Any easy ways to test without renting a pressure gauge? Naturally any other wild ideas/crack pot solutions are welcome. If it was a tractor, I'd just put it in third and tow it through a field until something happened. Thanks in advance,

'82 and '83 245s, about 500k between 'em

(and a beautiful new '85 that's turing into more and more of a project...)
