High rpms 700 86

What is the result of a vehicle's rpm settings at 2000? Can it cause damage? I picked up my station wagon and when I started, the idle was 2000rpm and stayed there. I asked the mechanic to please lower the rpms but he said there was nothing wrong with it. I asked to have it lowered, he lowered it to 1500rpm and still I was not happy. He stated that there was nothing else he would do. When the car was placed into park, the entire car jolted into gear and lowered to 1000rpm. I know this can not be healthy for a car. I had several things happen after driving the vehicle at this high rpm and wanted to know if they were related? Front and Rear seal replaced on transmission, torque converter replaced, transmission pan gasket replaced.
