Air Conditioning in c1990s 240 - Repost 200 1990

Misposted this to Opinions:

I have two 240 wagons, an '83 and a '90. I just had the compressor replaced on the '83 and it cools well.

The '90 has a small freon leak. I'd love an ozone-friendly retrofit, but my mechanic warns:

1. The AC system on this 240 (and a few years before) just can't handle the more powerful compressor, and

2. I'd never be happy with the performance of a retrofit suited to the wimpy '90 240 system, and

3. It would cost a fourtune to retrofit parts until the system could handle the stronger compressor.

Am I getting the straight dope?

BTW, I live in South Texas with summer temperatures well over 100 for long stretches, 110+ not unusual at all. I am not

expecting to have to wear gloves while driving, but I'd like to keep my kid cool in the back seat.

I see lots of folks driving 240s here with the windows up -- they can't all be sauna freaks.
